Hurricane season is part of life in South Louisiana, and preparation is key to protecting your business, jobsite, home, and family. SLHBA encourages members and the public to plan ahead, secure property early, and stay informed through trusted local and state emergency resources.
Preparing Your Business
Before a storm enters the Gulf, businesses should review their emergency plan, update employee contact information, back up important records, and secure office equipment, signage, outdoor furniture, dumpsters, and loose materials. Business owners should also review insurance coverage, photograph property and inventory, and make sure important documents are stored safely.
Preparing Your Jobsite
Construction jobsites can become dangerous quickly during severe weather. Secure or remove loose building materials, tools, portable toilets, scaffolding, fencing, dumpsters, and temporary signage. Protect building openings, move equipment to higher ground when flooding is possible, and allow enough time for crews to safely prepare the site before conditions worsen.
Preparing Your Home
Homeowners should know their evacuation routes, prepare an emergency supply kit, secure outdoor items, trim trees, check shutters or window protection, charge devices, and have important documents, medications, pet supplies, and cash ready. Stay informed through local emergency alerts and trusted weather sources.
After the Storm
After a storm, use caution around downed power lines, damaged structures, floodwater, and debris. Document damage before cleanup begins and contact your insurance provider as soon as possible. Never use generators indoors or in garages.
Hire Licensed and Insured Contractors
When storms hit, don’t get hit again. If your home or business needs repairs, make sure you hire a licensed and insured contractor. Verify licenses through the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors before signing a contract or making payments.
SLHBA is here to serve as a resource for our members and community before, during, and after hurricane season.
